The Sigur Center for Asian Studies is pleased to announce grants for language study and field research for Summer 2013. Students with an interest in furthering their Asian language skills or conducting field research in Asia are highly encouraged to apply. All GW BA, MA and PhD students are eligible for Language Grants. Asian Field Research Grants are open to MA and PhD students. Students may apply regardless of nationality.

Mahbub-ul-Haq Award 2013 Research Grants for Collaborative Research between Young South Asians

Purpose
The Regional Centre for Strategic Studies (RCSS) invites applications for research grants under its Mahbub-ul-Haq Awards programme. There are two awards available for this year. This award is intended for a collaborative study between two researchers, one each from a different South Asian country.

This award was originally introduced by RCSS in 2001 as part of the Non-Traditional Security Project in Asia. Named after a distinguished South Asian whose vision made the UN Human Development Report a landmark of the international developmental discussion, the award encourages exploration of security issues outside the realm of traditional security. The idea behind the award is to get two young South Asian scholars of two different nationalities to work together on the same project, bringing their diverse interests and background to bear on the study. The collaborative effort has also helped younger scholars to strengthen the networking which only RCSS has been able to develop in the region.

The duration of the award is for nine months, commencing from 1st January 2013. The grantees will be expected to conduct the research in a collaborative process and will be under obligation to produce and submit to the RCSS an original research monograph in English with a 20,000 word count.

US$ 1,000 will be paid to each of the awardees (US$ 2,000 per grant).

• Nationals of South Asian countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka – are eligible to apply for these research awards.
• Candidates should have a Master's degree in International Relations, Strategic Studies, Political Science, Economics, History, Anthropology, Journalism, International law, or other related subjects and be below the age of 35.

GW Deadline: November 16, 2012 
Each year the Carnegie Endowment offers 8-10 one-year fellowships to uniquely qualified graduating seniors and individuals who have graduated during the past academic year. They are selected through a highly competitive process from a pool of nominees from close to 300 colleges, and each year, GW may endorse only two applications.

Individuals who have started graduate studies are not eligible. Candidates should have significant coursework in international affairs, political science, economics, history or Russian or Chinese studies.  Other relevant foreign language abilities are desirable as well.

Carnegie Junior Fellows provide research assistance to senior researchers working on the Carnegie Endowment's projects such as non-proliferation, democracy building, trade, US leadership, China-related issues and Russian/Eurasian studies. Junior Fellows have the opportunity to conduct research for books, co-author journal articles and policy papers, participate in meetings with high-level officials, contribute to congressional testimony and organize briefings attended by scholars, activists, journalists and government officials.

• Asian Studies – Mandarin Chinese reading skills a huge plus.  Japanese language skills my be helpful.

• Russian/Eurasian Studies – Excellent Russian language skills are required.

AWARD: Positions are paid, full-time positions for one year. Junior fellows are currently paid a gross salary of $36,000/year. A full benefits package is also provided.

ELIGIBILITY: Graduating seniors and those who have graduated within the past year.  Applicants should have at least a 3.7 GPA and cannot have started a graduate program.

2013 Blakemore Freeman Fellowships & Refresher Grants for Advanced Study of Asian Languages Blakemore language grants are awarded to individuals pursuing professional careers in fields such as business, academia, journalism, public service, law, science, medicine, architecture, engineering, the fine arts, education, etc. who would benefit from improved fluency in an East or Southeast Asian language. For 2013, the Blakemore Foundation plans to award between 12-15 grants for the advanced study of Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Khmer and Burmese.  The grants cover tuition and a stipend for related educational expenses, basic living costs and transportation, but do not include dependent expenses. The Foundation is now accepting applications for its 2013 Blakemore Freeman Fellowships and Blakemore Refresher Grants. The postmark deadline for applications is December 31, 2012.  For application forms, eligibility requirements, grant guidelines and instructions see the Foundation's website at www.blakemorefoundation.org. The Blakemore Freeman Fellowships fund an academic year of advanced language study at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies in Yokohama, the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing, the International Chinese Language Program at National Taiwan University in Taipei, and similar programs in other countries of East and SE Asia. Where there is no structured advanced-level language program at an educational institution in the country, the grant may provide for the financing of private tutorials under terms set forth in the application instructions.  The fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents of the U.S. who have an undergraduate degree and are pursuing academic, professional or business careers that involve the regular use of an East or Southeast Asian language. The most important criteria for selection is a focused, well-defined career objective involving Asia in which the regular use of the language is an important aspect.   Blakemore Refresher Grants are intended to provide mid-career professionals an opportunity to renew their East Asian language skills by attending a language program in Asia for a summer or semester of intensive full-time language study at the advanced level. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S., working as a professional in an Asian field, or teaching in an Asian field as a professor at a college or university in the United States, or be a former Blakemore Freeman Fellow.

The China Times Cultural Foundation announces fellowships for doctoral dissertation research in Chinese studies, 2012

Applicants must be doctoral candidates in humanities or the social sciences with an approved dissertation prospectus. Enrollment in a university in the United States or Canada required.

Scholarships are in the amount of US$5,000 each. They are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement without regard to academic discipline, race, or nationality.

In addition, there will be a special award in memory of Mr. Chi-Chung Yu, founder of the China Times Foundation. It will be given to the highest ranked of the applicants, and will carry a cash award of US$10,000.

Applicants must send a completed application form, curriculum vitae, official transcript of graduate course work, reprints of publications (if any), and a project description in English and Chinese.

Deadline for applications is JUNE 30, 2012. Awards will be announced in October 2012.

Program Description:
The Offices of the Provost and the Vice President for Research are pleased to announce that they are now accepting applications for the Undergraduate Research Fellowship.

This fellowship aims to promote discovery and inquiry-based learning for undergraduate students at GW. The Undergraduate Research Fellowship supports undergraduate student-initiated research carried out in collaboration with, and under the guidance of, at least one faculty mentor.

The research should undertake a significant, focused examination of an idea or an area of inquiry and result in work that could merit presentation or publication in a scholarly venue. The Research Fellowship may take place over a period of time ranging from weeks to across semesters as long as it is completed within a single academic year.

Total funding for each fellowship will be $10,000. Up to six fellowships will be funded.

Eligibility: Student applicants must currently be freshmen, sophomores or juniors, have a minimum GPA of 3.4, a declared major, and no judicial or disciplinary findings against them. Students may be enrolled in any school of college at the university. Please note that students may not concurrently hold a Rice or Gamow award during the tenure of the Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Faculty mentors must be GW faculty (full-time, part-time, or adjunct).

Award Period: Funding for research projects will be available starting July 1, 2012 and the research must conclude by April 30, 2013. A brief report describing what was accomplished during the project period will be required by April 30, 2013. Research Fellows are also expected to participate in GW’s annual Research Day during March 2013.

Support: These Research Fellowships offer $10,000 to the student for research-related expenditures, including wages, living expenses, travel, materials, and equipment. Budgets must be feasible and must reflect the time frame of the project and the nature of the inquiry.

Asia Pacific Week is an annual conference held by the Australian National University focusing on trends and developments in the Asia Pacific region. The conference is a joint initiative by students and the ANU College of Asia & the Pacific. Incorporating a number of innovative and trans-disciplinary sessions, ANU Asia Pacific Week 2012 aims to facilitate communication and forge connections between top academics and students.

ANU Asia Pacific Week will bring leading experts on the Asia Pacific region together with 100 delegates from around the world to engage in a series of dynamic discussions and events focused on developments and trends that will shape the ‘Asia Pacific Century’.

Aspen Institute India is delighted to announce the "Aspen India" - Avantha International Fellowship 2012” for the second year. It is looking for two motivated international students to come to Delhi during the summer of 2012.

Candidates should ideally be from the field of International Relations/ International Development Studies/ South Asian Studies, who want to gain broad knowledge of the world of philanthropy, social reform and development in India. Students pursuing Masters program are preferred, though applications from seniors in a Bachelors program may also be considered.

As “Fellows” the two selected candidates will learn about the social, political and economic issues facing the world’s largest democracy. In addition to international exposure and leadership experience, Fellows will gain firsthand experience on these issues, and learn from the best practices and expert minds in the field. You will also have the opportunity to actively support Aspen India in their ongoing leadership programs, outreach seminars, workshops, conferences, and other related events where applicable.

This would be two month program; the dates would be flexible and based on international university schedule.
